What Is Cocoa Butter?

Natural cocoa butter

This natural, aromatic fat is extracted from roasted Theobroma cacao seeds, during the production of cocoa powder. Cocoa butter has gained popularity in the hair and skin care field due to the luxurious feel it renders to your skin and hair.

The presence of essential fatty acids, phytochemicals, Vitamin E, antioxidants and other bio-active compounds in cocoa butter enhances hair texture, strengthens hair roots, enables better moisture retention and prevents various hair problems such as dryness, dandruff, split ends and hair loss.

Owing to cocoa butter’s rich texture and other skin friendly physical properties, it is used as a base for a wide range of medicinal ointments.

Benefits Of Cocoa Butter For Hair

1. Moisturizes Your Hair

Packed with fatty acids (stearic, oleic and palmitic acids) [1], the rich, creamy texture of cocoa butter infuses your hair strands with essential moisture. It penetrates deep into the hair shaft and reduces hair porosity. Moisture in your hair adds bounce, shine and elasticity, which makes your hair look healthy.

2. Prevents Hair Loss

Cocoa butter is packed with polyphenols [2], which as per research can prevent male and female patterned hair loss. It has the ability to inhibit DHT hormones that are responsible for androgenic alopecia. Furthermore, cocoa butter's intense moisturizing abilities prevent your hair follicles from drying up. Massaging your scalp with cocoa butter keeps your scalp healthy and your hair roots nourished.

3. Strengthens Hair Shaft

The cuticle layer of a damaged hair strand appears raised when observed under a microscope. Applying cocoa butter on your hair seals the cuticle layer, strengthens the hair shaft and prevents easy breakage.

4. Repairs Damaged Hair

Rich in Vitamin E and other antioxidants, cocoa butter is an excellent hair rejuvenator. It battles free radical hair damage that leads to premature hair greying and hair loss. Cocoa butter’s healing nature repairs hair damage and adds volume to thin, dull hair.

5. Controls Dandruff

Cocoa butter is an excellent anti-dandruff treatment. It detoxifies your scalp, unclogs your follicles and helps soften and remove existing dead skin flakes. Cocoa butter’s sweet scent also prevents foul odour caused by dandruff. Its therapeutic properties are useful in keeping various scalp infections away.

6. Good For High Porosity Hair

People with curly hair often swear by cocoa butter for its ability to prevent shrinkage and tame porous hair. High porosity hair requires hair products that are heavy for sealing in enough moisture. Cocoa butter’s emollient properties makes it an essential ingredient in curly hair care routine.

7. Protects Hair From Environmental Damage

Cocoa butter not only seals moisture into your hair strands, but also forms a protective barrier over your hair. This keeps your hair safe from UV exposure, chlorine water, dust, pollution, heat damage and chemical hair products.

8. Improves Hair Texture

Cocoa butter’s rich, velvety nature softens dry, brittle hair and gives it a smooth finish. It coats individual hair strands and seals the cuticle layer. Using cocoa butter as a leave-in conditioner adds shine and keeps your hair silky all day.

9. Prevents Frizz

Cocoa butter is a natural remedy for hair frizz. Its creamy texture has a long lasting effect on your hair strands and leaves you with easily manageable, tangle free hair. Regular application is known to completely reduce dryness and split ends, giving you celebrity hair everyday.

10. Promotes Hair Growth

Cocoa butter battles various hair issues which ensures optimum nutrition absorption and damage control for your tresses. The presence of sulphur in this natural butter prevents hair breakage. The mineral magnesium found in cocoa butter is known to enhance blood circulation in the scalp which ensures better oxygen supply to your hair roots. All such benefits allow healthy hair growth and keep hair problems at bay.

“Dryness of hair is due to Vata vitiation and oiliness is due to Kapha vitiation. If these doshas are imbalanced and Pitta aggravated, then we can see the change in texture of skin and hair. Cocoa butter is helpful in removing frizziness and has a good moisturizing effect. It helps in removing the unfavourable influence caused by vitiated Vata and Kapha on the scalp,” says Dr. Mamtha Tandle, Ayurvedic doctor at Vedix.
