What Is Grapeseed Oil?
Grapeseed oil is an odorless and light-weight oil, which is naturally extracted from the grape seeds that have been leftover from winemaking . Grapeseed oil has existed for over 6000 years.
This oil is a rich source of fatty acids such as oleic acid, linoleic acid, alpha-linolenic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, omega-3 and omega-6. Also, it contains vitamins-C, D and E, which all together improves the health, texture and look of your hair dramatically.
Besides being used for aromatherapy, and as a replacement for vegetable oil in cooking, grapeseed oil is widely used in several haircare and skincare products.
In ancient times, Greeks used grapeseed for medicinal purposes. It contains Proanthocyanidin, which is helpful in protecting your skin, blood vessels and cardiovascular systems. Also, it is known to lower the risk of certain types of cancers.
How Safe Is Grapeseed Oil For Hair?
As per the National centre for complementary and integrative health in the USA , grapeseed oil is beneficial as well as safe for all scalp and hair types, unless you have an allergy.
The recent studies conducted by Princeton University concluded that plant oils such as grapeseed oil work as natural conditioning agents for hair. It is lighter and penetrates the scalp tissue quickly, thus, it does not clog the follicles or cause scalp buildup.
Though the natural grapeseed oil has several benefits for your hair, most of the commercial products that have grapeseed oil are processed using hexane, a well-known air pollutant and neurotoxin. Also, the grapeseed oil which is processed at high temperatures may have depleted properties and may not benefit your scalp and hair.
Therefore, it is better to pick a grapeseed oil which is prepared using expeller-pressing or cold pressing processes as they don't require high temperatures or chemical solvents such as hexane.
Benefits Of Grapeseed Oil For Hair
1. Controls Scalp Dryness And Dandruff
Many factors such as exposure of your hair to high temperatures, UV rays, dry climate, using harsh chemical products and dyes, etc. can result in dry and itchy scalp. Eventually, this can turn into a flaky scalp with dry dandruff. Grapeseed oil can be your best choice to treat your dry scalp with flaky dandruff condition effectively. The vitamin-E present in grapeseed oil moisturizes your scalp as well as prevents dehydration in the scalp tissue.
2. Fights Frizz And Hair Damage
Grapeseed oil can be your saviour from frizzy and damaged hair. It contains linoleic acid which acts as a damage-controlling agent for your hair. Grapeseed oil works as a protective layer for your hair. It reduces the effects of friction and seals the cuticles excellently. Thus, you can tame your frizzy manes.
3. Improves Shine
Grapeseed oil works best to bring out a natural shine to your hair without causing product buildup. It has lighter density and can be applied on any hair type without making it greasy.
4. Gives Softer And Silky texture
The fatty acid content in the grapeseed oil fills in the cuticle gaps and minimizes the porosity of your hair. This in turn, makes your hair much softer and gives it a smooth and silky texture.
5. Promotes Stronger Hair Growth
Grapeseed oil contains all the nutrients and flavonoids which are essential for vitality and stimulating hair growth in the follicles. Also, massaging your scalp with warm grapeseed oil boosts the blood circulation in your scalp, thus, promoting stronger hair growth.
6. Fights Free Radicals
Grapeseed oil is rich in carotenoids and oligomeric proanthocyanidins that have anti-proliferative and anti-oxidant properties . They help in fighting the cellular damage caused by free radicals in your scalp and hair while boosting the regeneration of new and healthy hair cells. Also, the anti-oxidants present in grapeseed oil help in preventing premature greying of your hair.
7. Reduces Hair Loss
Grapeseed oil contains DHT hormone inhibitors, which help in preventing the blockage of your follicles with DHT hormones. Thus, it helps in controlling the DHT hair loss (alopecia) and strengthens your hair follicles.
8. Protects Against UV Damage
The phenolic compounds present in grapeseed oil help in protecting your hair from UV damage. Also, it has natural anti-inflammatory properties which soothes your scalp.
‘’Grapeseed oil suits all the hair types including straight, curly, wavy, short or long,” says Dr. Zeel Gandhi.
