Do you want your hair to smell great and feel fresh all the time? You should try using a hair mist. Hair mists leave a long-lasting and pleasant fragrance in your locks.

In this article, let's understand the different benefits of using hair mist, how to use it the right way, and the side effects of hair mists you should be aware of. Read on.

Our Ayurvedic Doctor Speaks

“Hair mists help refresh hair between washes. Make sure your mist contains clean and safe ingredients and is alcohol-free and nonallergenic. Floral waters have been used since ancient times as mists for both hair and skin.”

Dr. Zeel Gandhi (Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine & Surgery), Chief Ayurvedic Doctor, Vedix

What Is Hair Mist?

A hair mist is nothing but a lightweight, water-based perfume that is specially made to use on the hair. Besides aromatic fragrances, most hair mists are enriched with nourishing vitamins and minerals that make your hair soft and shiny. Also, hair mists are absolutely safe for everyday use.

Why Are Hair Perfumes Different From Skin Perfumes?

Most skin perfumes may contain 60-70% alcohol as a volatile solvent. Using it on hair for a long time can lead to dryness, frizziness, and hair breakage. Also, chemicals such as diethyl phthalate, used as a synthetic fragrance in skin perfumes, causes hair damage.

On the other hand, hair mists or hair perfumes are water-based aromatic formulations that are alcohol-free. Hair mist acts as a revitalizer for your tresses, by adding nourishing and shine-lending aromatic oils to your hair.

Did You Know?

Frequent exposure to diethyl phthalate [1] that is used in perfumes can cause nausea, headache, and dizziness.

Why Should You Use A Hair Mist?

Just like your clothes, your hair also often tends to trap strong odors from smoke in the air caused by surrounding pollution, campfires, cigarettes, or even from the foods being cooked. Sometimes, the build-up of sweat, products, and sebum on the scalp also causes a bad odor.

You can't shampoo every single day to get rid of such an unpleasant smell from your scalp and hair. Also, using hair cleansers daily would result in stripping of natural oils from the scalp, leading to dryness. A nice hair mist would help in freshening up your manes in between hair washes and prevent unpleasant odors.

Hair Mist Benefits

1. Nourishes Dry Hair

The essential oils [2] used in hair mists not only give a sweet scent to your hair but also nourish the weak hair strands with essential vitamins and minerals.

2. Smoothes Hair Texture

By hydrating the cuticle layer, hair mist helps in enhancing the cuticle integrity, thus giving your rough and dull manes a smoother texture.

3. Protects Hair From External Stressors

Hair mist forms a protective shield around the hair strand against different environmental stressors such as UV radiation, pollution, harsh weather conditions, etc.

4. Tames Unruly Tresses

Hair mist helps in detangling hair and controlling frizziness instantly. This keeps your hair gorgeous and lustrous all day long while smelling great and fresh.

How To Use Hair Mist?

Shake the hair mist spray bottle well. Keep the bottle at a distance of 20 cm approx. from the hair and spray it uniformly across the scalp and hair strands. Later, run your fingers through your hair gently to evenly distribute the mist. “Hair mists should always be used as a final step in your daily hair care and styling routine,’’ says Dr. Zeel.

Vedix Tip:

For better coverage, flip your hair upside down and spray the mist from the roots to the tips.

Take 1 cup of rose water. Add 10-15 drops of jasmine essential oil, 25-30 drops of grapefruit essential oil, and 5 drops of pure vanilla extract into it. Heat the solution on a low flame for a few minutes and let it cool down. Pour the solution into a spray bottle and store it in a dark place.

Take 1 cup of distilled water and add 1 spoon of freshly extracted aloe vera gel. Add 10 drops of lavender essential oil into the solution and use it as a hair mist.

Take 1 cup of rose water. Add 10 drops of lemon oil and 3-4 drops of orange oil into it. Mix the ingredients well and store it in a spray bottle.

Side Effects Of Using Hair Spray

Generally, no side effects have been reported using a hair mist. However, hair mists made of certain harsh chemicals can trigger allergic reactions on the skin in some people. Also, certain essential oils used in hair mists can be very strong and potent to cause allergic reactions [3] in people with sensitive skin.

Dr. Zeel recommends doing a compulsory patch test 48 hours before using a hair mist on your scalp and hair.

Tips To Use Hair Mist Spray The Right Way

Make sure your hair is dry before spraying the hair mist for a better and long-lasting fragrance.

While spraying, do not hover on one particular area for a long time as it gives an uneven application of the product.

You can keep spraying the hair mist every 3-5 hours to let your manes shine and spread the sweet fragrance instantly.

Frequently Asked Questions On Hair Mist

1. Can You Use Hair Mist On Dry Hair?

In general, hair mists are fortified with aromatic natural oils which not only give a refreshing scent but also have a nourishing and hydrating effect on the hair. Hence, hair mists can be used on dry hair, without causing any damage.

2. Can You Use Hair Mist On Wet Hair?

When you use hair mist on wet hair, the water acts as a barrier and does not allow your tresses to absorb the fragrance. Hence, the scent of hair mist doesn't last long when it is sprayed on wet or damp hair. Instead, you need to use it when your hair is completely dry.

3. Can You Use Hair Mist As A Perfume?

Hair mists, made of natural and skin-friendly ingredients, can absolutely be used as alternatives to traditional perfumes. However, it is recommended to do a patch test before using a hair mist as a perfume on your skin.

4. How Long Does Hair Mist Last?

In general, the fragrance of hair mist may last for 3-5 hours. However, some hair mists with strong aromatic ingredients may last all day long.

The Last Word

Due to multiple factors such as pollution, grease, sweat, or improper personal hygiene, one may experience smelly hair at times. While most people tend to spray skin perfumes on hair, it can cause hair damage in the long run. Instead, opt for a hair mist made of natural herbal fragrances, which not only leaves your hair with an amazing sweet scent but also gives it a soft and smooth texture.
